Violence broke out today during a Nigerian Professional Football League fixture involving Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars, as enraged home fans stormed the pitch and brought the match to a halt.
According to eyewitness reports, the tension escalated after a contentious decision, prompting a section of the crowd to invade the field.
The referee became the primary target of the assault and was forced to flee for safety. Players of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) were also attacked as the situation spiralled out of control.
Security personnel on duty struggled to contain the chaos, eventually resorting to firing tear gas to disperse the aggressive supporters and restore order. Several minutes of disruption followed before calm gradually returned to the stadium.
Details regarding injuries, arrests, or official sanctions are yet to be confirmed. The Nigeria Premier League organizers and relevant authorities are expected to issue a statement and launch an investigation into the incident.
The unrest has once again raised concerns about matchday security and crowd control at Nigerian football venues.
