Conference League Round of 16: Crystal Palace, Fiorentina and Sparta Prague seek qualification.

The UEFA Conference League enters its most volatile phase tomorrow, as the Round of 16 kicks off across Europe.

While the “big names” have dominated headlines, the knockout play-offs proved that traditional powerhouses are more vulnerable than ever. From Premier League darlings facing resilient Cypriot defenses to Serie A staple looking to avoid another Polish upset, the road to the final in Leipzig remains wide open.

Crystal Palace vs. AEK Larnaca

Crystal Palace enters this tie as the heavy favorite to lift the trophy, but their continental journey hasn’t been without its wobbles. After a narrow 3-2 aggregate escape against Zrinjski Mostar in the playoff round, Oliver Glasner’s men know they cannot afford another sluggish start at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles are expected to lean on their superior Premier League athleticism to suffocate the visitors from the opening whistle.

AEK Larnaca, meanwhile, arrives in South London as the ultimate underdog with very little to lose. Having secured an automatic spot in the Round of 16 following a strong league phase, the Cypriot side is well-rested and tactically prepared to sit deep and frustrate.

Their game plan will likely revolve around a low block, hoping to catch a forward-thinking Palace side on a rare counter-attack or a set-piece.

The atmosphere at Selhurst Park will be electric for the club’s first major European knockout home game.

However, Palace must be wary of the Conference League trap if they fail to break the deadlock in the first half, the frustration of the home crowd could become a factor. Ultimately, the quality of players like Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta should be enough to see the Eagles take a comfortable lead to Cyprus.

Fiorentina vs. Raków Częstochowa

Fiorentina Conference League

Fiorentina, twice finalists in this competition, find themselves in a familiar position as one of the favorites. However, their defense has been anything but stable lately, exemplified by a chaotic 5-4 aggregate win over Jagiellonia in the playoffs where they nearly surrendered a massive lead.

Manager Stefano Pioli will be demanding much higher levels of concentration at the Stadio Artemio Franchi to avoid another Italian scare.

Raków Częstochowa represents a formidable challenge, having finished second in the overall league phase standings.

The Polish side is renowned for its defensive discipline and high work rate, qualities that are perfectly suited to neutralizing an often-mercurial Fiorentina attack.

They will likely view the first 60 minutes as a containment exercise, looking to keep the scoreline level before exploiting any late-game nerves from the hosts.

This matchup is a clash of pedigree versus momentum.

While La Viola has the historical advantage, Raków is playing with a level of cohesion that can rattle even the best Serie A sides. If Fiorentina can find an early goal, they may stroll to victory; if not, this could become one of the most stressful nights of the season for the Florence faithful.

Samsunspor vs. Rayo Vallecano

This fixture is a historic meeting between two European debutants who have taken the competition by storm. Samsunspor has been the tournament’s true “discovery,” cruising into the last 16 with a dominant 5-0 aggregate victory over Shkëndija.

In front of a raucous Turkish crowd at the Canik 19 May Stadium, they will look to play with a high-intensity press that has already caught several opponents off-guard this season.

Rayo Vallecano brings the tactical sophistication of La Liga to the table. Under Inigo Perez, the Spanish side has been a model of efficiency, though they did show some vulnerability toward the end of the league phase.

Their objective in Turkey will be to control the tempo and quiet the stadium through possession, preventing the game from turning into a frantic, end-to-end battle that favors the hosts.

Expect a cagey opening as both teams feel each other out. Samsunspor will likely rely on their physical advantage and home-field energy to create early chances, while Rayo will bank on their technical superior players to produce a moment of magic. This tie feels incredibly balanced, and a draw in Samsun wouldn’t be a surprising result for either manager.

AZ Alkmaar vs. Sparta Prague

AZ Alkmaar has long been a standard-bearer for Dutch football in Europe, and they proved their quality once again with a 4-1 aggregate dismantling of Noah in the previous round. Playing at the AFAS Stadium, they are at their most dangerous, utilizing a fluid 4-3-3 system that emphasizes quick transitions and overlapping wing-backs.

They will be eager to secure a multi-goal lead before facing a hostile return leg in the Czech Republic.

Sparta Prague, however, is a battle-hardened outfit with a wealth of experience in the higher tiers of European competition. They finished fourth in the league phase and possessed a physical presence in both boxes that could cause AZ significant problems.

Their game plan will likely involve direct play and high-quality crossing, aiming to test a Dutch defense that has occasionally looked frail under high pressure.

This is a classic “Total Football vs. Pragmatism” battle. AZ will want to keep the ball moving at high speed to tire out the Sparta defenders, while the visitors will look to turn the match into a scrappy, stop-start affair. Given AZ’s recent home form, they are slight favorites, but Sparta has the tools to keep this tie very much alive.

Lech Poznań vs. Shakhtar Donetsk

Lech Poznań carries the hopes of a football-mad city into this clash with Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk. The Polish side looked professional in their 3-0 aggregate win over KuPS and will look to use the Enea Stadium as a cauldron of noise to rattle the visitors.

Their success this season has been built on a solid defensive spine and a remarkable clinical edge on the counter-attack.

Shakhtar Donetsk is perhaps the biggest “name” in the draw, possessing a squad filled with international talent despite their recent transition period. They finished sixth in the league phase and have a knack for finding an extra gear during knockout football.

Their technical ability in the middle of the park is likely superior to Lech’s, which should allow them to dictate the play for long periods.

This tie will be won or lost in the transition phases. If Lech can catch Shakhtar’s high line with their pacy forwards, they could pull off a major first-leg upset. However, if Shakhtar is allowed to settle into a rhythm, their experience and individual quality might be too much for the hosts to contain over 90 minutes.

HNK Rijeka vs. Strasbourg

Rijeka has turned the Rujevica Stadium into one of the most intimidating venues in the competition, having already dispatched Omonoia with a disciplined 4-1 aggregate win. The Croatian side thrives on being the underdog, playing with a “heart-on-sleeve” intensity that often overwhelms more technically gifted opponents.

They will look to make the game as physical as possible from the first whistle.

Strasbourg, under the guidance of Gary O’Neil, enters the Round of 16 as one of the dark horses for the title. Backed by their youthful energy and a clear tactical identity, the French side finished top of the league phase and enters this tie with immense confidence.

They possess a varied attacking arsenal that can hurt teams both through patient buildup and explosive speed.

This is a true test of Strasbourg’s maturity. Can a young Ligue 1 side handle the hostile, high-pressure environment of a Balkan away day? If they can survive the initial 20-minute storm, their superior depth and quality should shine through. However, if Rijeka grabs an early lead, they are masters at “closing the door” and frustrating the opposition.

NK Celje vs. AEK Athens

NK Celje is the ultimate Cinderella story of this year’s competition, reaching the Round of 16 after a thrilling 6-4 aggregate victory over Drita. The Slovenian side plays without fear, often committing men forward in a way that creates high-scoring, chaotic matches. For them, hosting a giant like AEK Athens is a celebration of their progress, but they have no intention of simply making up the numbers.

AEK Athens arrives in Slovenia with the expectation of a professional, dominant performance. As one of the heavy hitters from Greece, they finished third in the league phase and boast a squad that is significantly more expensive and experienced than Celje’s.

They will look to exert control early and use their physical dominance to bully a smaller Celje defense.

The danger for AEK is complacency. Celje has already proven they can score goals against anyone if given the space, and the Slovenian crowd will be desperate to witness one more miracle. AEK should win this comfortably on paper, but the Conference League has a habit of punishing teams that don’t respect the underdog.

Sigma Olomouc vs. Mainz 05

Sigma Olomouc pulled off one of the more impressive results of the playoffs, overturning a first-leg deficit to beat Lausanne-Sport 3-2 on aggregate. They are a team built on collective unity and a strong home record at the Andrův Stadium.

They will likely adopt a defensive posture tomorrow, hoping to keep things tight and take a narrow scoreline back to Germany next week.

Mainz 05 brings the relentless intensity of the Bundesliga to the Conference League. They are a well-drilled, physically imposing team that specializes in winning second balls and dominating the flanks. Having finished seventh in the league phase, they view this competition as a legitimate chance for silverware and will likely approach the first leg with an aggressive, attacking mindset.

This matchup will be a test of endurance. Mainz will look to use their superior fitness to tire out Olomouc over the course of the 90 minutes. While the Czech side will be organized and difficult to break down initially, the sheer volume of pressure Mainz can apply often leads to late breakthroughs.
