Efe Sodje Against all Odds

Etetobore “Efe” Sodje is a former Nigerian defender known for wearing a do-rag and a headband with the inscription, often featuring the words “Against All Odds”. Efe Sodje represented the Super Eagles at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil and the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.

The former Nigerian defender hails from a family of footballers, as his brothers Sam, Akpo, and Steve played football, but Steve only played sem—professionally and never played a football league game. Another brother, Bright, played rugby while his nephew, Onome Efe, also played professionally in England. Tai Sodje, Efe Sodje’s teenage nephew, also plays football. He played for the Manchester City youth team until he was released this summer.

Although Efe Sodje had a short stint with the national team, he is remembered for his tenacious and aggressive style of play as well as his unwavering commitment to the badge. Efe played for Nigeria twelve times and scored his only goal in a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland.

Efe Sodje had a nomadic club football career just like his Super Eagles colleague Batholomeu Ogbeche, as he played for a handful of clubs in England before he retired in 2014. He started his career at Stevenage Borough and ended his career at Portsmouth.

He had quite a decent career, but his involvement in fraud and time in jail remains a dent in his post-football career.

This post examines Efe Sodje’s background, career, achievements, and controversy, among other vital information about the former Super Eagles defender.

Born in Greenwich, London, Efe Sodje’s family originated from Warri Delta State. Efe Sodje has three brothers: Bright, Sam, and Akpo, who all played football. Efe Sodje’s nephew, Onome, also played in England, while his other brother, Bright, chose another path as he played in rugby union.

How old is Efe Sodje?

The former Nigerian defender is 52 years old as of 2025. Efe Sodje was born on the 5th of October, 1972, in the United Kingdom. He was born in Greenwich, London, but opted to play for Nigeria at the international level.

Club career: Stevenage, Macclesfield Town, Luton Town, Crewe Alexandra

Efe Sodje played in England and never went abroad in his club career. He played for thirteen club sides across different regions of the country over a period of two decades.

Etetobore Sodje began his professional career in the Conference National with Stevenage Borough ahead of the 1994–95 season, after unsuccessful trials at Wimbledon and Luton Town.

He made his first-team debut in a 1–0 defeat to Welling United in September 1994. Sodje went on to make 33 appearances in his first season and scored his first goal as a substitute in a 5–0 victory over Yeovil Town.

Efe Sodje played a key role the following year, making 49 appearances and scoring five goals as Stevenage won the Conference National title. Unfortunately, the club was denied promotion due to inadequate ground facilities. His third and final season was his most memorable as he scored seven goals in 55 games, helping the team to a third-place finish.

Sodje made 138 appearances and scored 13 goals for Stevenage before joining newly promoted Football League side Macclesfield Town in 1997.

He marked his Football League debut by scoring in Macclesfield’s first-ever league game. Over two seasons, he made 83 appearances and scored six goals before moving to Luton Town in 1999. His time at Luton was brief, featuring only nine times before a loan spell at Colchester United, where he made three appearances.

In 2000, Sodje signed with Crewe Alexandra. He went on to make 97 league appearances over three seasons, scoring his first goal for the club in a 4–2 win over Portsmouth in December 2001. His impressive form at Crewe earned him a first-time call-up to the Nigerian national team, and he was selected to represent his country at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.

Contract termination at Gillingham after a week

Efe Sodje began a new chapter in his career when he joined Division Three side Huddersfield Town, where he was immediately appointed team captain. He made his debut for the Terriers in a 2–1 League Cup victory over Derby County on 12 August 2003, followed by his league debut in a 2–2 draw against Boston United just four days later. His first goal for the club came in a 2–0 home win over Boston United in January 2004. Sodje played a pivotal role in helping Huddersfield secure the Division Three Play-off title that season.

His standout performances earned him a place in the PFA Players’ Division Three Team of the Season for 2003–04. Following Southend United’s relegation from the Championship in the 2006–07 campaign, Sodje departed the club.

On 10 July 2007, he signed a two-year contract with League One outfit Gillingham and made his debut in a narrow 1–0 defeat away to Cheltenham Town on 11 August. In February 2008, he was loaned to Bury for the remainder of the season. Shortly after, on 5 June 2008, he was placed on the transfer list.

Just weeks later, on 1 July 2008, Gillingham announced the termination of his contract. Two days later, Sodje rejoined Bury on a two-year deal, this time as a player-coach. Ahead of the 2010–11 season, manager Alan Knill named him second vice-captain, behind Ryan Lowe. In May 2011, he extended his stay with a new two-year contract.

Efe Sodje reached a major milestone in January 2012, making his 500th league appearance in a 1–1 draw against Charlton Athletic while playing for Bury.

In June 2013, he returned to Macclesfield Town as assistant manager to John Askey and also registered as a player. He left the club in November 2015 for undisclosed reasons.

Premier League inexperience

Despite playing in England for over two decades, Efe Sodje never played in the Premier League, but the defender said he has no regrets. Instead, he revealed that he is proud of his achievements in the lower leagues. Efe Sodje spoke to Complete Sports in an interview in 2020 about his career in England.

Get me right, I would have loved to play there (Premier League), but I don’t regret not playing there because I achieved my ultimate aim playing in the lower leagues in England, making over 600 appearances and scoring about 40, 41 goals. I doubt if there was and is a Nigerian defender in England that scored the number of goals I scored.”

“I achieved almost everything a footballer could hope to achieve in his career.I captained a football club in England and above all achieved the lifelong dream of all footballers which is to play in the FIFA World Cup. As a Nigerian I also had the honour of playing in Africa’s biggest competition, the Africa Cup of Nations. What more do I want? There Nigerians players in the premier league who didn’t play at the World Cup and /or Nations Cup. So,why would I feel any pain that I didn’t play in the premier league?”.

Efe Sodje’s imprisonment

In September 2017, former Super Eagles footballer Efe Sodje was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his involvement in a fraud case, alongside his brothers Stephen and Bright Sodje. The trio was found guilty of misappropriating funds from the Sodje Sports Foundation, a charity they had established. The case, which came to public attention in January 2019, revealed a calculated misuse of their influential roles within the organization for personal financial benefit. The Charity Commission condemned the actions as a clear breach of trust and abuse of privilege.
