Bayern Leverkusen have sacked Erik Ten Hag as head coach of its first team a few months after his appointment.
Erik Ten Hag’s sack comes after the former Champions surrendered a two-goal advantage away at Werder Bremen over the weekend.
The 2024 Bundesliga champions lost their opening match of the season – a 2-1 loss to Hoffenheim despite scoring first.
Bayer Leverkusen gave away a 3-1 lead to a 10-man Werder Bremen on Saturday as the host scored twice in fifteen minutes to restore parity.
They need to bring more intensity and get fitter in order to meet my standards. After the international break, we face real competition and must perform as a team.
“That begins with taking responsibility and delivering individual performances. And they have to demonstrate to me that they want to work together.”
The shocking result fueled speculations about Erik Ten Hag’s future over the weekend as the club hierarchy sat to make a decision.
Bayer Leverkusen announced the departure of the Dutch manager in a statement via its X page on Monday morning:
Bayer 04 Leverkusen has parted ways with head coach Erik ten Hag with immediate effect. Training will be taken over by the assistant coaching staff for the time being.
The former Bundesliga champions appointed Erik Ten Hag as head coach of the club in May on a two-year deal after a quite successful three-year spell at Manchester United.
Erik Ten Hag signed a two-year deal with Bayer Leverkusen worth about €4.5 million per year, which means the 55-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam could receive over €8 million in compensation.
