Jürgen Klopp is set to become Germany’s new head coach, with reports indicating he has agreed to replace Julian Nagelsmann following the country’s shock exit from the 2026 World Cup.
Nagelsmann resigned after Germany crashed out in the round of 32, losing 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay, a result DFB president Bernd Neuendorf addressed while confirming the coach’s departure and thanking him for his commitment since September 2023.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Klopp has accepted the role, though details of his exit from Red Bull, where he serves as head of global football, are still being finalised before a formal announcement.
Klopp, who left Liverpool in 2024, confirmed the talks himself during a Magenta TV appearance, saying discussions moved quickly once Nagelsmann stepped down and the DFB approached him.
He acknowledged his existing Red Bull contract but said he does not expect the company to block the move, adding that he feels “recharged” after his time away from the touchline.
The appointment would end a near decade-long wish among German fans to see Klopp take charge of the national team, with reports suggesting he will be given broad powers to overhaul youth development and playing style.
Germany have now gone without a World Cup knockout win since their 2014 triumph in Brazil, and Klopp’s remit will reportedly focus on rebuilding the squad ahead of future tournaments.
