Iwobi equals Mikel Obi’s 12-year-old AFCON record

Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi equalled the record of former captain of the team Mikel Obi after Super Eagles’ victory yesterday over Tanzania at the Africa Cup of Nations Group C opener.

Alex Iwobi started in midfield and had a fantastic outing on the night as Nigeria sealed a 2-1 win extending their unbeaten record against the Taifa Stars.

The Fulham midfielder provided the assist for the first goal as Semi Ajayi met with his well-measured cross with a header that landed in the back of the net.

Iwobi also found Ademola Lookman with a swift left-footed pass that led to the second goal.

Iwobi, according to statisticians at Opta, is now the second Nigerian player to record two assists in a single Africa Cup of Nations match since Mikel Obi at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations against Mali.

Alex Iwobi will look to replicate his impressive performance against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia Nigeria’s second group match on Saturday night.
