The Nigerian community in Saskatchewan is in high spirits this morning after their U17 representative side powered past Spain to claim the 2026 Regina Mini World Cup title.
The final held at the AffinityPlex, the Nigerian squad affectionately referred to as the “local Golden Eaglets” delivered a clinical performance to secure the championship trophy in what has become the province’s most prestigious multicultural sporting event.
Nigeria utilized their signature explosive pace to break down a disciplined Spanish defense, while both sides could not find the back of the net during the regular time, Nigeria however stood tall during the penalty shootout defeating Spain by 4:3 on penallties.
While the WCP Cup (World Class Players) is a community-driven tournament, the quality on display shows the intensity of international youth football. For the players, many of whom are part of the Nigerian diaspora in Canada, the win was a statement of Nigeria’s cultural pride.
The Regina Mini World Cup has grown into a massive scouting and cultural hub, featuring over 100 teams and 50 different nationalities. This year’s U17 final was highlighted by organizers as a standout fixture, drawing one of the largest crowds of the weekend to the REAL District.
With this victory, Nigeria cements its reputation as a powerhouse in the local circuit, further fueling the “Golden Eaglets” legacy that continues to inspire young Nigerian footballers across the globe.
The team is expected to be honored by local community leaders later this week to commemorate the achievement.
