2026 WCQ: South Africa boss hoping to beat Nigeria to seal ticket

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has stated that his team is looking to secure their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating the Super Eagles of Nigeria next Tuesday.

The Bafana Bafana solidified their lead at the top of Group C with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Lesotho, taking their points tally to 16, nine points clear of Nigeria and five ahead of second-place Benin.

As it stands, South Africa could qualify for the World Cup as early as next week. For that to happen, they need both Rwanda and Benin to drop points in their upcoming games, and they must then defeat the Super Eagles when the two rivals clash at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Despite facing a Nigerian team brimming with quality players, Broos is confident his side can finish the job at home.

“We won against Lesotho today. And now we will see next week against Nigeria. If God is with us, then we can maybe qualify for the World Cup by next Tuesday, and that stays as the target for us. We are in a good situation, we have everything in our own hands, so it’s up to us to now finish it.”

The Super Eagles are set to play Rwanda in their next qualifier on Saturday and will be looking to claim a crucial victory to keep their own hopes of qualifying for the Mundial alive.
