Heartbreak for Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbache

Benfica Jose Mourinho Fenerbache Club Brugge

Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbache failed to clinch a ticket to the league phase of the UEFA Champions League after losing to Benfica in Lisbon.

The first leg ended in a stalemate in Istanbul with both sides in contention to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.

Benfica started the second leg in front of their home supporters in Lisbon with fierce momentum as they scored twice before the half hour mark.

Unfortunately, none of the goals stood courtesy of the video assistant referee’s intervention – an offside and a foul in build up to the second goal.

The Video Assistant Referee has no issue with Kerem Arturcoglu’s goal as the Greek forward have Benfica the lead in the 35th minute.

Jose Mourinho’s men failed to register a shot on target in ninety minutes as the Benfica progressed to their fifteenth UEFA Champions League main draw in 16 years.

In other results, despite a 3-2 win away at Qarabag, Ferencvaros couldn’t secure a league phase spot as they lost 5-4 on aggregate to the Azerbaijan champions.

FC Copenhagen two-nil home win over Basel was enough to secure a spot in the league phase after 3-1 aggregate scoreline.
