In a thrilling encounter at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, Sunderland and Watford played to a 2-2 draw in the Championship. The match was marked by a significant contribution from Watford’s Tom Dele-Bashiru, who scored a crucial penalty just before halftime.

Sunderland began the game assertively, taking the lead in the 16th minute through Luke O’Nien. The midfielder capitalized on a defensive lapse to put the hosts ahead.

However, the momentum shifted in the 43rd minute when Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin committed a foul on Watford’s striker Mamadou Doumbia inside the penalty area. Dele-Bashiru, brother of Super Eagles midfielder, Fisayo, stepped up confidently and converted the spot-kick, leveling the score at 1-1.

The visitors carried their newfound energy into the second half, taking the lead just a minute after the restart. Imran Louza delivered a spectacular strike from distance, curling the ball into the top corner and leaving Sunderland’s goalkeeper with no chance.

As the match progressed, Sunderland intensified their efforts to find an equalizer. Their persistence paid off in the 89th minute when Cirkin redeemed his earlier mistake by scoring from a corner delivered by Enzo Le Fee, bringing the score to 2-2.

The closing moments of the game were filled with drama. Sunderland had two clear opportunities to secure a victory in stoppage time, but Watford’s debutant goalkeeper, Egil Selvik, made crucial saves to deny both Wilson Isidor and Le Fee, ensuring the match ended in a draw.
