World Cup qualifying action continued across Europe, with several nations taking significant steps forward.

In an emotional tribute to the late Diogo Jota, Portugal thrashed Armenia 5-0. Cristiano Ronaldo led the way with two goals, his 139th and 140th for the national team.

João Félix also netted a brace, and João Cancelo contributed a goal while celebrating with a tribute to Jota.

In a dramatic Group F opener, the Republic of Ireland fought back to secure a 2-2 draw with 10-man Hungary. After going down 2-0 early, a goal from Evan Ferguson and a late equalizer from substitute Adam Idah in injury time salvaged a point for Ireland.
