In a recent interview, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney admitted that he has never considered Neymar Jr as a World Cup player
A lively debate among former Premier League stars and pundits over how Neymar measures up against players who have graced English football.
The discussion, hosted by The Overlap, featured strong and often conflicting opinions from some of the game’s most recognisable voices.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was unequivocal in his assessment, naming three players he believes surpass the Brazilian forward.
“Wayne Rooney is better, Cristiano Ronaldo is better, Thierry Henry is better,” Keane stated.
Adding to the conversation, former England defender Gary Neville pointed to Mohamed Salah as another player he rates above Neymar.
However, that claim was quickly challenged by ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright, who disagreed with Salah’s inclusion in that bracket.
“Mo Salah is not better than Neymar,” Wright insisted, highlighting the divide in opinions among the panel.
Perhaps the most striking comment came from Wayne Rooney himself, who offered a blunt verdict on the Brazilian’s standing in world football.
“I have never seen Neymar as a top player,” Rooney said.
Former England women’s national football team midfielder Jill Scott also weighed in, naming Sadio Mané as her pick ahead of Neymar.
The debate highlights Neymar’s controversial legacy. While his flair and individual brilliance have earned global acclaim, questions around consistency, injuries, and influence at the highest level continue to divide opinion especially when compared to other top players.
