Nigeria’s Flamingos beat Puerto Rico 2-0 in their second Group B match at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. The win keeps their knockout hopes alive after an opening 2-1 loss to Poland.
Needing victory, the Flamingos attacked from the first whistle. Chidera Chidiebere, Okuwakemi Adegbuyi and Queen Joseph unsettled the Puerto Rican defence early, and Adegbuyi broke the deadlock five minutes before the half-hour mark, finishing off a Joseph assist.
Nigeria came out with the same intent after the break. Favour Nkwocha, Tosin Rafiu and Joseph all had chances to double the lead but failed to convert, while Puerto Rico created moments of their own.
The Flamingos kept their shape and composure to protect the slim advantage until added time, when substitute Precious Oscar sealed the win. She scored from an Oluebube Umejiaku assist after a Kanyinsola Yusuf corner.
The result handed Puerto Rico their second defeat of the tournament, following a 6-0 loss to reigning champions North Korea. Nigeria moved to second in Group B with three points, behind North Korea, who lead with six after thrashing Poland 6-1.
The Flamingos face North Korea in their final group match on Friday, needing a result to reach the knockout stage.
