Awoniyi suffered a ruptured intestine following a collision with a goalpost during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester.
The coma is intended to limit his movement and stabilize his heart rate, though his condition is not considered life-threatening.
Awoniyi received lengthy treatment on the pitch and tried to play on despite visible discomfort. However, further tests by Forest’s medical team on Monday evening revealed the severity of his injury, leading to his urgent hospitalization.
He underwent surgery on Tuesday, and Forest reported that he is “recovering well so far.”
After the match, which dented Forest’s Champions League hopes, club owner Evangelos Marinakis went onto the pitch to speak with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
The club clarified that this was due to frustration over Awoniyi being allowed to continue playing. In a statement, Forest said:
“The truth of the matter is there was no confrontation with Nuno or with others, either on the pitch or inside the stadium.
“There was only shared frustration between all of us that the medical team should never have allowed the player to continue.”
